A blast from the past

We get asked about this every now and again, and finally have found an official Jobo response!
A note that accompanied a shaft housing sent out in the mid 80's. Jobo USA CS added this note to clarify that the missing cross braces are not broken, but are removed by the factory.
This is the way the pump shaft housing should look.

New production Jobo CPP3 lift tested

We recently posted our first impressions of the all new CPP3, and have just been handed a new production Jobo LIFT (Jobo part #4073).

This new production lift is the same as the "New Style" lifts we know from the CPE2 and CPA2\CPP2 systems (read HERE about old vs. new style lifts), with a few minor changes.

The first noticeable thing is the this lift is labeled for the all new CPP3. The lift it self fits snugly over the new machine and add various advantageous features to the already incredible CPP3 (read HERE about adding a lift).

The new production lift has a thicker gauge metal handle, and a new, unbreakable drain hose.
As expected all actions on this new lift are smooth and follow suit with the build quality of the new CPP3.
The lift sports all black easy running rollers, specially designed for use with Expert drums. These rollers have a stainless steel axle which can be lubricated and greatly reduce the strain on the motor when using heavier drums.

The new CPP3 lift is backwards compatible with all CPA2 and CPP2 machines, and can also  be adapted for use with CPE2 and CPE2+ machines.

Film is alive and well in the North West

In a recent visit to Seattle, WA and Portland, OR, we had a chance to walk in to two amazing camera stores. On a Friday morning we stumbled in to Glazer's camera in Seattle, where they basically have an entire store dedicated to traditional photography. With a HUGE film fridge at the back and isles and isles of chemistry, paper and other darkroom stuff this was an amazing sight, they even have some Jobo gear from the olden days.

Glzaer's film fridge, includes some 5X7 and 8X10 in stock...

They carry all of the IP polaroid stuff along as well as the all new "AGFA" pan roll films and rollei high silver content films and "rodinal" esque chemistry. As far as the eye could see, there was not a film they did not have in stock. Amazing.

At Photo Center NW we found an exciting hub of photography. It is a gallery combined with a community photo education center which amongst other things offers courses in traditional photography and includes a very well stocked darkroom and and wet work area.

While in search of a gallery In Portland, we just fell into another amazing place - Pro Photo Supply . They had a nicely stocked film fridge in their satellite lab/print/frame store as well as tons of Lomo/Holga/IP stuff.

Their main store across the street had a film fridge so well stocked that the word impressive would be an understatement. They also had an incredible selection of darkroom papers and traditional photo supply.

Later we visited New Space Center for Photography in Portland. Like the Photo Center NW in Seattle, this is also a gallery combined with an educational facility. Aside from the great work currently on exhibit there, they too offer traditional photography courses and a wet darkroom.

We even found a bunch of single use film cameras at the Snoqualmie falls tourist store (AKA Twin Peaks falls).
So how about those firns eh?

ATL 1000 circulation pump failure diagnosed

$

Recently, we serviced an ATL1000, which had some common failure symptoms, encountered by many of the users of the ATL1000 as it ages. As the average age of these machines is getting to be 20 or more years, some components require a closer attention.

In this case, the machine exhibits normal behavior, until it warms up, in which case it begins to slow down, and eventually dies out with a long beep. This failure is often attributed to a failed circulation pump, located inside the water trough of the machine, just under the black chemistry bottles. The motor of the pump draws more and more power from the board, until a thermal overload is reached and machine stops. After letting it cool down it will go back to normal, until it heats up again and dies again.

The cure in this case, is the replacement of the circulation pump with a new one.

The original blue pump will show tell tale signs of the end of its service life - note the are circled in the second photo. The crack in the outer housing of the pump is caused by buildup of corrosion inside the motor housing. The buildup will push against the housing until it bursts, deforming the housing and further overloading the motor. The pump itself is housed in a sealed casing (we had to crack it to open it), meaning it cannot be serviced and must be replaced.

As you can see in this photo, the motor itself, has attracted lots of corrosion, and once the housing gets cracked, due to the strong magnetic force, every metal particle free floating the system is attracted to the motor, further exacerbating the problem.
While the brushes and the motor itself may still be within proper operating specs, there is no way for the axle to stay lubricated, and the motor eventually seizes, causing the board to overload.

Contact us for more info about this problem, or if you need a quote to replace your ATL1000 circulation pump as a preventative measure.
